About Going Big
Going Big is a personal hiking blog which will chronicle the prep and actual execution of an Northbound Appalachian Trail attempt.
In addition, a blog about life and hobbies outside of hiking is maintained under the sub-title 'The Ocho'. Until such time that I push off from Springer
It is maintained by it's sole contributor and author Jason 'Wiki' O'Connell.
Why Going Big?
The name sake of this blog stems from a conversation had via social media after a planned day hike of Mt. Katadhin that led to my rediscovery of the Appalachian Trail.
I was planning a day hike of Katadhin with a friend and announced our plans on Facebook. Then an acquaintance of ours asked if we would be camping. The obvious response at the time was:
"No we're just peak bagging and crashing in a hotel or hostel"
The response was somewhat unexpected.
"Well if you don't camp you're not really going big"
For some reason this struck a nerve with me and I started researching the most difficult trails that summit Mt. Katadhin, and that was how I rediscovered the Appalachian Trail. Following this rediscovery I followed the 2014 Northbound trek of Texaco and decided that I wanted to 'Go Big' by thru-hiking the AT.
